Angeliki Karamina
Founder and Director of Living Room SoHo
Certified GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Instructor

sa s 0007

angeliki 8.jpegAngeliki Karamina is the founder and director of Living Room SoHo, as well as a member of the teaching faculty.

She studied GYROKINESIS® under master trainer Young-Ah Kim and GYROTONIC® under Specialized Master Trainer Erika Hassan. She began practicing these methods while pursuing her dance training at New York City’s Peridance Capezio Center in 2008. After twenty-plus years of dancing and dance-related injuries, Angeliki found herself unable to continue performing professionally—a crisis which, compounded by the loss of her father Ioannis Karaminas, left her searching for answers and desperate for healing. She was enormously grateful to discover the deeply transformative and empowering practices of both GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®. The spiraling movements and intentional breathing of these techniques invited her to create a new relationship with her body, a new recognition of her spirit and a new definition of her worth.

Born and raised in Athens, Greece, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Science, with a specialization in the History of Ancient Athletic Arts, from Athens’ Kapodistrian University as well as a graduate degree from the Academy of Greece. Her areas of expertise include anatomy, physiology, physiotherapy and sports psychology, and athletic pedagogy for young children. A dancer both the Royal Academy and Vaganova ballet methods, as well as an accomplished performer of modern dance/Limón technique, she has been teaching ballet and other physical exercises for the past ten years.

Her greatest wish and her motivation in founding Living Room is to share the affirming and inspiring truth with others that you don’t have to be “perfect.” She seeks to help her clients relax both their bodies and their expectations of themselves, and to offer them the space to arrive at their own definition of what it means to be a valid and valuable human being.

Lily headshotLily is a Certified GYROTONIC® instructor, as well as a GYROKINESIS® apprentice with a background in dance and aerial performance. Her dance training began in Florida and included a variety of dance techniques, with continued studies as a fellowship student at The Alvin Ailey School and Joffrey Ballet in New York and the LINES Ballet Trainee Program in San Francisco. While studying at LINES, Lily was first exposed to GYROTONIC® as a means of cross training, and continued practicing throughout her professional career with Nashville Ballet and multiple modern dance companies across the country. After an injury in 2009, Lily again turned to GYROTONIC® as a way to heal from her injury, and found a new love for the technique which gave her the chance to return to the dance studio. Lily took her first foundation training with Kathy Van Patten in Boston in October of 2010, and was certified in May of the following year. She worked for two years at GYROTONIC® Boston Central under Lisa Pari, gaining invaluable knowledge which changed her understanding of both her own body, and body mechanics as a whole. Jessamine Joy
Certified GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Pre-trainer

dianna headshotBorn in the Philippines and grew up in Nigeria and in the U.S. from a family of academicians, she studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science but found time to pursue other avocation in performing arts. After working as a software developer, a project manager for a few years, as a scuba diving instructor and despite spanning the creative, physical and technical fields of this day and age, something was still missing. When randomly asked one day, what she believed in, without a flinch, she replied with mirth, “I believe I was brought here to help bring balance to this world. I don’t know how yet but I’m going to find out”.

After a whirlwind of traveling, she returned to New York 2007 she was introduced toGYROTONIC® method and practiced steadily to rehabilitate her body’s restrictions from pain, injuries, mild scoliosis and two knee surgeries. It is far more fulfilling and alleviating for her with all the physical issues she had which led her to become a teacher so that she could teach herself. During this time she realized the many dynamic possibilities of the movement system, how it can help bring balance in one's overall well-being, her interest and alacrity to share the benefits of the work with others flourished. Having been so fortunate and so incessantly grateful to have amazing teachers, friends and family inspired her more to pass on the work to others with passion and to do her best in keeping the integrity of the work.

She has been traveling around the country and overseas in the past 4 years, mostly training and teaching in GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® courses, Specialized Equipment, movement for performance enhancement, therapeutic applications and workshops. Seeing the changes in people’s bodies for the better, healing and over all well-being, has been one of the most gratifying experiences in her life. This has certainly helped her gain more clarity to answer that random question of how to bring balance at least one person at time. Currently she is a licensed GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Pre-Trainer based in New York / New Jersey. She has recently integrated meditation, part-time computer work in her daily life and started training this year in dance with ballet, contemporary and hip-hop now that she feels stronger, healed and has more awareness in her movement with the hopes of inspiring others just as she has been inspired by her own teachers.

Caroline Brethenoux
Certified GYROKINESIS® Teacher

caroline headshotOriginally from France, Caroline moved to NYC in December 2012 to follow her passion for dance. Her parents who wanted to channel her energy and imagination put her in a ballet class when she was 5 years old. She has danced since then wherever her career in advertising has taken her – Paris, Hong Kong, Madrid - adding contemporary dance, yoga, acroyoga and martial arts to her training. She has performed with Complutum Contemporary Dance Company and DaDaDanza Project in Spain, collaborated with Projects in Movement and Company Contexte in Paris, and taken part in diverse dance projects in NYC with Mare Nostrum Elements Dance Theatre Company, BalaSole Dance Company and independent choreographers as a freelance dancer and choreographer.

It is in NYC that she has dived into Gyrokinesis. Experiencing the benefits of this practice in her own body while keeping on training in dance, she quickly decided to become a teacher under the guidance of Jessamine Joy, Erika Hassan, Miriam Barbosa and Chantal Deeble. Our daily postures, stress, tension from practicing other demanding sports and just any emotions imprint on our bodies. That's why Caroline's classes are designed to reopen the body through a continuous and fluid flow, letting her students redefine their own physical boundaries and enjoy a new found freedom in their movement in their daily life. Having been trained by inspiring teachers, Caroline feels it is now time for her to give back to others as much as she has received, if not more.
